Stephen Wallace sacked by Offaly
Stephen Wallace’s reign as Offaly manager is over despite a player statement of support for the Kerryman to the county board.
Rumours of player unrest had emerged after the county were beaten by Wicklow in their first-round Leinster SFC clash on Sunday.
A statement by Offaly GAA tonight said: “The decision was made that Stephen Wallace should not continue as Manager of the Offaly Senior Football Team. An Interim Management Team will be appointed as soon as possible.”
It’s understood, however, that some of the players had today signed a letter to the county board confirming their commitment to playing under the management team.
Former All-Ireland hurling referee and Clara GAA chairman Brian Gavin told RTÉ Sport yesterday that the situation was “embarrassing” and that “the man-management and the decision making of the management is the straw that broke the camel’s back.”
Forward Nigel Dunne also took to Twitter to deny that he had to be persuaded to return for the second half at O’Moore Park.
