‘Carlow are the story of the championship’

“Carlow rising” declared Turlough O’Brien after his side scalped Kildare in the Leinster SFC quarter-final, and Sean Cavanagh does not disagree.

The Lilywhites were left reeling in O’Connor Park, Tullamore after the underdogs turned them over 2-14 to 1-10.

The Division 4 champions now play Laois in the semis believing they can make it to Croke Park for a provincial final, and former Tyrone forward Cavanagh said O’Brien’s men are a breath of fresh air.

“They are the story of the championship,” he said on The Sunday Game.

“They were the story of the 2017 championship[. They’ve kicked 4-21 in two championship games. If you had said that about Carlow a few years back ago people would have laughed at you. You have to give them full credit.”

Kildare meanwhile slumped to their 12th loss on the spin, with manager Cian O’Neill afterwards labelling the result and performance “humiliating”.

Colm Cooper said these are worrying times for Lilywhites supporters.

“I watched these guys last year in a Leinster final and for large periods they were hugely competitive against Dublin. I really thought Kildare were on the rise but that has completely stalled.

“They seem to have no confidence. It’s going to be a really tough task for Cian O’Neill to get things back on track now.”
